Seems every year the same thing happens….cold weather comes, time spent at work increases to the point that I just don’t have a lot of spare time to do the things I like doing. Things that I need to do to get some peace of mind, to ease the monotony of repetition. Once work starts to slack off a bit I just don’t have the energy or desire to get out and do ANYTHING. And, as is the case now, I get sick for a month at a time and just don’t feel like getting out of a chair.
Well, today is the day to turn things around.
Spring is just around the corner (even though more snow is predicted tonight). It’s time to get out of that chair and do something useful. I’ve got a camera with a full charge on the battery and 32 Gb of space on the card. I’ve got an old, tired body that needs to get some exercise. Time to get up in the morning and DO SOMETHING.

Photo of the old courthouse on the town square in Franklin, KY. The county paid to decorate the old building this year with lights both on the structure and in the trees around the square. We even have Christmas music playing through speakers in the clock tower. Very nice to see as it gets you in the spirit.

This autumn was exceptional in the colors that we were presented with. The vibrant yellows, reds and oranges are the delight of any photographer who passes them.
So sad that so many people are so caught up in their routines that they barely even notice what a beautiful display nature has put forth for them. Speeding down the road, late to work, talking on the phone, wondering why the guy in front of them won’t go faster….all the while missing out on the things that only happen for a brief amount of time.
Take your time, leave a little earlier for your appointment. Enjoy what God has put there for you to enjoy before it passes by.

Finally got a weekend out of my workplace, first in a about a month. It felt so good to not have to go in that place to the smell of toluene and silicone in the air, and to just be out in nature. Someday I will get things organized and be able to spend more time doing the things I love and not the things I do only to get the bills paid.
The leaves are changing now but still a couple of weeks from peak. Halloween weekend should be the one with the most color. Maybe I’ll be able to get out and take a few shots during this all too short spectacle.
These shots were taken yesterday in a beautiful place that I found only last year. I thought I knew every nook and cranny in western Allen County, but this one had managed to elude me all this time. This road simply has a sign that says “Goodnight Hollow” and doesn’t have any homes on it. It leads to a shallow (most of the time) water ford that has a parking spot and a swimming hole on the far side. Such a nice spot…..

There’s a saying in landscape photography that goes something like, “if you want to get the shot, use f8 and be there”. Here’s a prime example of that.
I got up early last Sunday to go out and try to get a few landscape shots. I’ve been through these roads many times before and will go through them many times again, but the magic that the early morning brings is something that you’ll always miss if you don’t get there very early. There’s been many times that I’ve gone hunting in this area of eastern Allen county just as the sun begins to illuminate things to the point you can make out objects, well before it ever breaks the horizon. It’s almost like a different world from what you see during the daytime, something foreign, but so beautiful. I would ask myself “why am I going hunting? I need to be taking pictures!”.
I think this year I’ll give up more of my hunting days in favor of the camera.

Keith Bridgman, Alan and Sheila Reeves and myself made it out to Shanty Hollow Lake in north Warren County yesterday. Got a few shots that I liked, but I think this one was my favorite.

I’ve taken many shots of this barn in the past and it always has a little different look that sets it off from the others. Maybe it’s the solitude of the lonely old barn being the only object in this field of alfalfa….not sure what it is, but it’ll keep me coming back time and again. I don’t know anyone who goes to this church….not sure how large the congregation is but the sign in front says they only have services every other Sunday. Very scenic spot that the church sets on.
